Good advice, it doesn't matter where you are from but just to seize the moment and shake it up. I'm just glad I come from a culture that doesn't stigmatise 'sticking-out' from the crowd by doing something so random as defying a system.

How steady is the ship?...

An interesting look at China's upper class, their relentless pursuit of money, and how they may have overlooked the finer things. When all is said and done, are you missing out on all the fun?...

I agree. Damn good post.

If money is your sole guide you're bound to get lost.

Most Chinese people definitely need to f*ck around more. Most of my Chinese friends are great people, but pretty straight-laced -- and usually not very surprising or spontaneous.

I have yet to hear any of my Chinese friends fart.

This is a really great post and I am very surprised that nobody else has commented yet. I have also experienced many of the same thoughts and feelings as you have about this. Chinese always saying how colorful my life is and how much they envy me. I can only give the same response as you. JUST DO IT! Until these people stop thinking money equals success they will just continue to waste their lives. It's a damn shame.

It's good to see that you're settling into Shenzhen--it's hardly the easiest place in China to feel at home.

I'm interesting to know if you've decided that, ‘Well that guy didn’t know shit!’

There are countless dimensions to China that shift and alter one's perceptions of both the culture and its people. There are some things that must be done (e.g. last class truck/bus/train travel) to gain a truer rapport with the people, and there are some things that should be avoided at all costs (e.g. KTV) as they can be highly dangerous to ones health.

I'll be interested to read which paths you choose, and where they take you.
